John 13:1 – 18:12
John spends more time on the last week of Jesus’ life than any of the gospel writers. And much of his material is unique. So there is 5 1/2 chapters worth of material to consider for todays devotional thought.
The purpose of this entire section is to prepare his disciples for his death. They didn’t get it, so they only understood in hindsight. But everything in these chapters led to the cross.
Prescience: (chapter 13) Prescience means to know in advance. The one with absolute knowledge tells of Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial.
Preparation: (chapter 14) This great chapter tells the disciples that his departure was necessary in order that he might prepare a place for them to come. He was leaving to make preparation.
Persecution: (chapter 15) The path of Jesus would be the path of the disciples. Because the world hated their master, they would also be hated by the world. All but one of the disciples would die a martyr’s death. John would die on the prison Island of Patmos.
Paraclete: (chapter 14 & 16) The promise of the Holy Spirit to reside with them in his absence fills the last half of chapter 14 and chapter 16. Here the term “paraclete” or “advocate” is used to identify one of the Spirit’s roles.
Prayer: (chapter 17) This incredible chapter shares some of the content of Jesus’ prayer in the Garden immediately prior to his arrest. And he prayed for you and me. 20“I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. 21May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you.”
Five “P’s” to provide pegs to piece together the passage.
