2019 and Beyond

Happy New Year Burnett Family,

I wanted to take a few moments to encourage you and share what God has laid on my heart for 2019. Maybe last year you struggled, maybe you were unsure of your calling, maybe you felt lost, but that can change this year and part of Burnett’s purpose is to help you do that. From the first day here God has told me his desire for Burnett - healthy growth - and that continues to be the theme of what God is telling me now. In my life the healthiest choices both physically and spiritually I Have ever made where a result of the influence of healthy people in my life. That’s why I am so aware of the importance of my own health now more than ever, it effects the health of our church. Today I am praying and fasting for our church and am openly committing to deepening my relationship with Jesus and lead myself well. I am inviting you to do the same, because your health also effects the health of our church. Will you join me in deepening your relationship with Jesus and self leadership too?

In 2019 we will deepen our relationship with Jesus.

‘The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” (Luke 17:5)

This is our mission. It is up on the wall and posted on our web-site. Often we focus on the three things listed as ways we will do it - pursue intimacy with Jesus, build a caring community, and influence others for Christ, but before any of these things are listed - the goal and mission is to deepen our relationship with Him. If we do this we will see others start a relationship with Jesus as a result of members of the Burnett Family deepen their relationship with Him. We can’t expect others to start a relationship with Jesus unless they experience a people who are deepening their relationship with Jesus. If we focus on growing in Christ, the Holy Spirit will guide us in reaching people and encouraging them to begin a relationship with Jesus (2 Peter 1:5-8). That’s salvation! Your spiritual growth can result in the salvation of someone! May that motivate and encourage you, because it’s not just about your spiritual health, it’s about others becoming spiritually alive.  Your Spiritual health effects the spiritual health of the church, and that effects the growth of our church. It excites me to think about our church as we embrace the joy of a deepening relationship with Jesus and the positive effects it will have on our community!

In 2019 we will lead ourselves well.

‘Teach us to order our days that we might present to you a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

That is our discipline. To be healthy we can’t expect to workout once in a while. It needs to be routine. We also can’t expect others to get healthy if we aren’t. That’s why self leadership is so important. What that means is that we need to get serious about the things we say to ourselves like - ‘I want to organize my calendar but I can’t bring myself to do it’ or ‘I want to be part of LifeGroup but I don’t have time’, if you aren’t even following your own desires - how can you expect others to. Change starts with you. Change starts with me. Influencing healthy choices in others starts with making healthy choices and sticking to them personally. BTW, influencing others is not just a job for leaders, its for all of us. 2019 must be a team effort and a healthy team is made up of healthy members. When we fall we get up, when others fall we help them up, that’s the kind of team we will be this year.

I am so thankful for each of you and know that I am praying for you all. The love and appreciation you have shown me and my family is overwhelming - thank you. The challenges you are facing are things you need God’s power and wisdom for - I am praying for you. I pray that God will protect you and be your refuge as you follow Him at work, at home, and in your community.  I also pray that God shows you your gifts and calling and that you gain the power and motivation to answer that call in the specific way he has made you to contribute to His great calling on our church- to know Him and make Him known.
